Semen Analysis & Wash

Semen analysis and semen wash are two different procedures often associated with assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and fertility treatments.

Semen Analysis:

  • Purpose: Semen analysis is a diagnostic test that evaluates the quantity and quality of a man's sperm. It is a crucial part of assessing male fertility and can help identify potential causes of infertility.
  • Components: The analysis typically includes the assessment of various parameters such as sperm count, motility (movement), morphology (shape), volume, pH, and other factors.
  • Procedure: A semen sample is collected, usually through masturbation, and analyzed in a laboratory. The results provide valuable information about the man's reproductive health.

Semen Wash:

  • Purpose: Semen washing is a technique often used in the context of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). The goal is to separate the sperm from the other components of the semen, such as seminal fluid and debris.
  • Procedure: After the semen sample is collected, it undergoes a process called centrifugation, which involves spinning the sample at high speeds. This separates the sperm from the rest of the components. The isolated, concentrated sperm can then be used for procedures like IUI or IVF.
  • Applications:
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): The washed sperm is directly placed into the woman's uterus, increasing the chances of fertilization.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): The washed sperm can be used for fertilizing an egg in a laboratory dish, and the resulting embryo is then implanted into the woman's uterus.
