IVF
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment that involves the fertilization of an egg by sperm outside the body. It's one of the most effective assisted reproductive technologies and is often used when other methods of assisted reproduction have failed or are unlikely to succeed.
Here is an overview of the IVF process:
- Ovulation Induction:
The woman undergoes hormonal stimulation to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Fertility medications, such as gonadotropins or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), are commonly used for this purpose.
- Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Retrieval):
When the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to aspirate the eggs from the ovaries. This is typically done under sedation or anesthesia.
- Sperm Collection:
On the same day as the egg retrieval, the male partner or a sperm donor provides a semen sample.
- Fertilization:
The retrieved eggs and sperms are combined in the laboratory for fertilisation by placing them in a petri dish and cultured.
- Embryo Culture:
The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are cultured in a special incubator for a few days as they develop.
