Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into the uterus to enhance the chances of fertilization. It is a relatively simple and less invasive procedure compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is often used as a first-line treatment for certain fertility issues.

Indications for IUI:

  • Unexplained Infertility: When there is no clear cause for infertility, IUI may be considered as an initial treatment.
  • Mild Male Factor Infertility: IUI can be beneficial when there are mild sperm abnormalities, such as low sperm count or motility.
  • Cervical Factor Infertility: If there are issues with cervical mucus that may hinder the sperm's ability to reach the egg, IUI can bypass the cervix.
  • Ovulatory Disorders: IUI may be used in cases of irregular ovulation or anovulation, often in conjunction with ovarian stimulation medications.
  • Mild Endometriosis: For women with mild endometriosis, IUI may be considered as a treatment option.
  • Donor Sperm Insemination: IUI is commonly used when donor sperm is being used for insemination.

Success Rates and Considerations:

  • Success Rates: Success rates for IUI can vary based on factors such as the underlying cause of infertility, the woman's age, and the number of treatment cycles. It is generally considered to have a higher success rate than natural conception but lower than more advanced treatments like IVF.
  • Multiple Pregnancies: IUI carries a risk of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets), especially if more than one egg is released during ovarian stimulation.
  • Patient Selection: The success of IUI depends on the specific factors contributing to infertility. It is essential for couples to undergo a thorough fertility evaluation to determine if IUI is an appropriate treatment option.
