Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus, called endometrium, begins to grow outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic structures. In some cases, it may even spread beyond the pelvic organs.

Some common features and symptoms of endometriosis include:

  • Pelvic Pain: The most prevalent symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. This pain may occur before and during menstruation and can range from mild to severe. The pain might also be present throughout the menstrual cycle.
  • Dysmenorrhea: Painful menstrual cramps, known as dysmenorrhea, are a common symptom. These cramps can be more intense than normal menstrual cramps and may last for an extended period.
  • Painful Intercourse: Pain during or after sexual intercourse, known as dyspareunia, is another common symptom. The pain may be deep and can persist for some time after intercourse.
  • Painful Bowel Movements or Urination: Endometrial tissue outside the uterus can irritate the surrounding pelvic structures, leading to pain during bowel movements or urination, especially during menstruation.
  • Irregular Menstrual Bleeding: Some individuals with endometriosis may experience irregular menstrual bleeding, including heavy periods or bleeding between periods.
  • Infertility: Endometriosis can be associated with fertility issues. The presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus may affect the function of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus, making it more difficult for a woman to conceive.
  • Fatigue: Chronic pain and the stress associated with dealing with a chronic condition like endometriosis can contribute to fatigue.
  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Endometriosis can sometimes affect the digestive system, leading to symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea, particularly during menstruation.
